At the very heart of Circeo National Park there is a promontory with amazing coves and cliffs. One of them, the Prisoner’s beach, is the most beautiful and secluded beach that you can find at a short distance from Rome and you absolutely can’t miss it.
The Prisoner’s beach
The Prisoner’s beach (spiaggia del Prigioniero) is named after a soldier who found safety during Second World War hiding at this amazing cove. At the bottom of the beach, indeed, there is a cave that is a perfect hide and also a comfortable place to shelter from sun and wind.
The two floors cave has a small natural balcony decorated with the large leaves of a wild ficus tree. From up there you can enjoy the sight on the white rocky cove and the blue waters. Inside the cave you can find hand made furniture built by the locals with woods and plastic brought by the sea. You can also add your contribution by decorating a wall with rocks and seashells 😉
The Prisoner’s beach is never crowded and it is the perfect oasis of peace to relax within your favorite book. When you have had enough of relaxing you can jump on your canoe and discover the numerous caves close to the beach or start your snorkeling adventure at Circeo National Park.
How to get to Prisoner’s beach
You can arrive at the cove only by boat, by booking one of the many tours leaving from San Felice Circeo’s Port. You can also rent canoes or pedalò at the closest beach (lido Saporetti on Lungomare Pontino) and get to the cove in about 40 minutes.
The best way to get to Circeo National Park is by car. You can also catch a train in Roma Termini and get off in Priverno-Fossanova train station (1 hour traveling; 1 train per hour; check time tables on Trenitalia official web site). Buses are going to Sabaudia from Priverno-Fossanova (20 minutes traveling; check time tables on Cotral app). Once you are in Sabaudia you can rent a nice flat and also an e-bike to discover every single spot of Circeo National Park and also the amazing Prisoner’s beach.

Il Promontorio del Circeo nasconde calette e grotte e, in particolare, una spiagga segreta che è tra le più belle della costa del Lazio.
La spiaggia del Prigioniero si chiama così perché durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale fu il rifugio di un prigioniero. In fondo alla caletta c’è una grotta che, in effetti, è un rifugio perfetto dal sole e dal vento.
La grotta a due piani, con un piccolo balconcino naturale affacciato sul mare, è arredata con oggetti di riciclo ed installazioni assemblate con il legno portato dal mare.
Tutti gli anni le mareggiate ed i visitatori poco rispettosi le danneggiano e gli abitanti del posto la ricostruiscono, ogni volta più bella.

La caletta ha ciottoli grandi, bianchi e levigati.
La vista dal balconcino naturale:
Sul lato destro della cala c’è un piccolo riparo con ombra fresca.
L’acqua è di solito pulitissima e trasparente e la cala è il posto ideale per godersi un mare limpido e poco frequentato (anche in pieno agosto). L’unico neo possono essere le imbarcazioni a motore che ormeggiano numerose (e a volte poco distanti) dalla cala.

Dalla spiaggetta del Prigioniero si può fare snorkeling esplorando grotte vicine e scogliere sommerse.
COME RAGGIUNGERE LA SPIAGGIA DEL PRIGIONIERO
La spiaggetta del prigioniero si raggiunge solo via mare, in barca oppure in canoa. Su Waterlife trovate tutte le info per fare le escursioni in canoa al mare, alle calette ed alle grotte del Promontorio. La distanza dal lago di Paola non è molta e l’escursione è adatta anche ai principianti, purché armati di buona volontà e rispetto per la spiaggetta, tra le più belle del Parco Nazionale del Circeo.
