Torun (Torunia during the Teutonic domination) is a Polish medieval town, equally far Gdansk and Łódź; I arrived on a sunny, warm day and I was soon impressed by its old walls encircling the historical Center,an UNESCO heritage since 1997.
Teutonic Castle
At the entrance of the town, on the left side, there is the Teutonic Castle: it is famous because of a medieval war.
In August 1409the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights Order declared war to the king of Poland, Wladyslaw II Jagiello.
The conflict, which had its climax at Grunwald on 15th July 1410 ended with the trety of Torun on 1st February 1411. The defeat in the war against Poland and Lithuania had significantly weakened military and economic potential of the Order in Prussia.
During the war Torun was supporting , organinzing military, political and economic assistance. The town was supplying food, means of transport, armed men, as well as craftmen. In Grunwald fields 21a soldiers from Torun took part in the biggest battle.
Most known for two reasons: World War II didn’t destroy its outstanding medieval Center and Pierniki, Torun was one of the first centers of the Pomeranian jewelery and artistic craftsmanship. Around its streets you can find a lot of funny bronze’s statues.
Leaning Tower
On the extreme left side of Torun’s map, you’ll find the Leaning Tower: built in 14th Century, it was used by defenders to drag ammunition up to the higher storeys. In the 18th Century the missing wall was addedand was established a prison cell for women.
When you arrive in the Rynek, you can’t ignore the magnificent Palace of Old Town with its Tower and the Copernico’s Statue just next.
Inside there is a really interesting Museum explaining about the born and development of the town.
Food
It is also very wide the choice for food place: I personally found delightful a Georgian dish called Pelmeni.
Torun is famous also for being the town of Gingerbread: there is an unusual Museum where you can find a lot of infos.
Gingerbreadwas purchased from market stalls: many buyers treated it as an exclusive delicacy with medicinal properties.
The virtues of Torun biscuits were praysed by vendors and even poets!
Gdansk spirits, Torun gingerbread, a Krakow maiden and a Warsaw slipper, the best that Poland has to offer
